Fathers Like Mine

For Derek Layton - forever the first in my mind when I think of the best example of a good father.

Too often society negates your role, 

for the fact that you don't have a womb;

and it wasn't you who for almost a year

shared your body so I'd have a room.

Too often society negates your role,

though we know of the joy of you near;

or the pain and the bitterness that some endure

in the moments when you are not there.

To fathers like mine who have done as they should,

to ensure that their offspring are safe,

you have loved and have fed and have given your best.

To you is this verbal embrace.
